UNHCR and IOM Reinforce Partnership to Support Afghan Refugees in Tajikistan
On September 6, 2024, the heads of UNHCR and IOM Tajikistan conducted a joint visit to the Ariana Educational Center in Vahdat, home to a significant Afghan refugee population. The mission centered on reviewing educational services provided to Afghan refugees and discussing future interventions with the center’s leadership. In addition, during the visit, UNHCR and IOM extended their Data Sharing Agreement, reinforcing their commitment to joint efforts in supporting refugees and vulnerable groups.
During the visit, Victor Lutenco, IOM’s Chief of Mission, highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating, “Our joint IOM-UNHCR work reflects the complexities on the ground and responds to the needs of both Afghan and Tajik communities. By working together, we are able to maximize our efficiency and effectiveness.”
Similarly, Ivan Saleyeu, Head of UNHCR National Office, emphasized the partnership’s critical role, stating, “This extension of our Data Sharing Agreement is vital for ensuring that refugees and other vulnerable populations in Tajikistan receive the support they need."
This collaboration between UNHCR and IOM strengthens their capacity to provide protection and essential services to Afghan refugees, ensuring more effective and coordinated assistance. Both agencies remain dedicated to improving the lives of refugees and helping them integrate into Tajik society.
Tajikistan, with a border of around 1,344 km with Afghanistan—the longest in Central Asia—has been deeply affected by the instability in its neighboring country for the past 40 years. As of June 30, 2024, Tajikistan hosts over 10,000 refugees and asylum seekers, with 78% of the country’s refugee population residing in Vahdat, making the city a central hub for refugee assistance and integration efforts, highlighting the city’s importance in ongoing humanitarian support. IOM and UNHCR in Tajikistan continues to advocate for non-discriminatory asylum processes, socio-economic inclusion, and sustainable solutions, with the support of expanded partnerships.
