"Rural Youth in Tajikistan Take the Lead in Combatting Human Trafficking”
Reach every victim of trafficking, Leave No One Behind.
From 30 July – 2 August 2023, IOM Tajikistan hosted a Youth Summer Camp for World Day against Trafficking in Persons in Romit, Tajikistan funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Twenty young people from rural communities across Tajikistan were chosen to attend a four-day summer camp to be trained on safe migration and combatting human trafficking. They also explored Tajikistan’s laws on human trafficking and learnt about the work IOM Tajikistan is doing on these topics. The sessions were theoretical, but also brought in practical cases and victims' stories. They were conducted by experts in the field, as well as representatives of International and Civil Society organisations, and officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Department of Combating Organized Crime.
But it wasn’t all studying; the camp members also took part in group games – implementing the knowledge they had gained in practical situations and role play. At the end of the camp, participants took all their practical and theoretical learning and created videos that addressed safe migration and trafficking and emphasized the significance of each victim of human trafficking.
The participants will now provide safe migration and counter trafficking information sessions back in their communities using the knowledge they gained.
The organizers express their gratitude to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support and to the trainers for educating our young people on the fight against human trafficking.
Every victim of human trafficking matters, and this camp was another step towards creating an informed and responsible society where we leave no one behind.
