The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency celebrated UN Day

On 25-28 October 2023, Dushanbe – To mark the 30th anniversary of the UN’s presence in Tajikistan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) – UN Migration Agency organized presentations for students of universities in Dushanbe.

Tajikistan joined the United Nations on 2 March 1992 as an independent state. The first office of the UN in Tajikistan was established in 1993. Since then, the UN has supported Tajikistan to achieve its national priorities in the areas of conflict resolution, emergency response, sustainable development, and human rights. As a UN Migration Agency, IOM has been working in Tajikistan since 1993 to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all through the provision of services and advice to governments and migrants, promotion of international cooperation on migration, and assistance in the search for practical solutions to migration problems.

IOM specialists conducted interactive sessions for students of international relations and international law at the Russian-Tajik Slavonic University and Tajik National University to raise awareness of youth on activities of the UN and IOM in Tajikistan. The sessions covered topics of a partnership between the UN/IOM and Tajikistan and strategic documents including Sustainable Development Goals, a Global Compact for Migration, and a Strategy for Regulation of Migration Processes in the Republic of Tajikistan for the period until 2040. Students took an active part in discussions, raised questions about the UN and IOM activities at global and country levels, and obtained knowledge on safe migration and combating trafficking in persons.

Moreover, the IOM Youth Focal Point presented and emphasized the IOM approach to youth engagement within the UN Youth 2030 Strategy and informed about opportunities for youth at IOM in Tajikistan. In turn, students expressed their interest in contributing to the promotion of humane and orderly migration among youth. At the end of the sessions, active students received small memorable gifts and information materials.
